Visions of the Future

This week, I’m choosing to forgo a traditional blog post in light of one of our class assignments, which is to create a dramatic rendering of a dystopian future arising from the misuse of technology in education (think MOOCs, flipped classrooms, etc. meets Big Brother – the 1984 one, not the TV one, although that would be pretty messed up too.) This whole assignment intrigues me, so I wanted to give myself time to explore it. A first attempt:

I may create more visions, so keep an eye out! I can’t wait to see what other people come up with.

  1. Another possible vision, inspired by the actual Big Brother Youtube channel’s self description:

Welcome to the OFFICIAL Big Data YouTube Channel!
Big Data will follow a group of professors working together in a classroom outfitted with dozens of cameras and microphones recording their every move 24 hours a day, seven days a week. One by one, the Colleagues will vote each other out of the classroom until at the end of three months, the last remaining Colleague will win the grand prize – the single open position at the University.

(I only changed about four words in this is the scary bit!)

Thanks for sharing! I have so many ideas floating around in my head and haven’t actually gotten to making anything yet.

I’m really intrigued by your second vision. Surveillance is becoming such a huge part of our every day lives, and it’s kind of scary to think how that will play out in the classroom.
